Joseph Yu’s Strength Formula

Strengthening party = 176
Weakening party = 246.4 (352*0.7)
This would mean a weak Day Master, but Danny Van den Berghe (see message 17342 of Joseph Yu’s “Four Pillars” Yahoo Group) suggests that, in fact, it is a strong DM.

Resource 96
Parallel 80
Power 78 (112 * 0.7)
Wealth 140 (200 * 0.7)
Output 40

This looks to be a balanced chart. Even the Output (Fire), although being the weakest element it is strong enough (see below).
On the other hand, take into account that in fact the Power is stronger than the 78 points, due to the Metal frame in the branches (see below).

OVERVIEW OF THE CHART

I would say that Oprah Winfrey is a YIN WOOD person, born in (Chinese) Winter, when Wood is strong. The chart supports the Wood, making it a Strong Wood.
At the same time, there is a strong Metal frame because You (Rooster), Chou (Ox) and Si (Snake) are present in the chart next to each other. This means that Metal element (which represents POWER) is very strong in this chart.
For a strong Day Master (DM), Power (Metal) is a favourable element. Consequently, having Metal strong is a good thing.
The Month Stem, close to the Day Master, is, again, Yi (yin wood). This strengthens the Day Master. Besides that, DM has a strong root in the Hour Branch (Jia).
Now let’s see how is the Resource, the element that nourishes the DM. The Year Stem is water (Gui). We find the same Gui hidden in the Month Branch, which makes the element well rooted.
That’s why the DM should be considered strong, despite the fact that it is weak according to the DM strength formula.
Another element with an important role in the chart is the Wealth (Earth) element. Wu (yang Earth) is the Hour Stem, close to the Day Master and the Month Branch belongs to Earth as well. And we still find Earth hidden, as a “minor god”, in the Hour Branch and the Year Branch. Earth is another favourable element.
Finally, Fire (Output) is an important element, considering that this is a Winter chart. Although it is not comparatively very strong, the fact is it appears as a “major god” in the Year Branch and as a “minor god” in the Hour Branch.
I think that the Useful God is Bing (yang Fire), which we can find in the Year Branch, as a major god, and hidden in the Hour Branch.
Her Focus (type chart) is Unbecoming Resource (Gui as minor god in the Month Branch and a stem in the Year Pillar).

My comment

In this research I’m trying to learn to read Ba Zi charts by comparing celebrities charts with their actual lives. In each case, I try to see whether there is any obvious match between what is outstanding in their charts and what is outstanding in theirs lives and their personalities.
In the case of Oprah Winfrey:

1. HER PERSONAL ELEMENT: YIN WOOD. Other celebrities belonging to this type are Bill Clinton, John Lennon, Princess Diana, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and John Travolta. People belonging to this type are usually kind, compassionate, adaptable and good motivators. Most of them are attractive. While the yang Woods tend to influence other people by expressing their opinions in an assertive way, the yin Woods know how to influence other people without making any effort. (While yang Wood is depicted by a strong tree, the yin Wood is depicted by a shrub or a flower)
2. CHART TYPE: UNBECOMING RESOURCE. Most of the times the element that defines the chart type (or focus) is one of the strongest in the chart. However, this doesn’t happen with Oprah’s chart. The yin Water (Gui), Unbecoming Resource, is not one of the strongest elements in the chart. Consequently, its influence is not as conspicuous in her life as the influence of the strongest elements (see below). An Unbecoming Resource person is someone mentally very alert, perceptive, sharp and with strong learning capabilities. They tend to hide their thoughts and feelings and to be solitary. (Note: I’m not yet sure about this description of the Unbecoming Resource type).
3. POWER (METAL) AND WEALTH (EARTH) ELEMENTS ARE VERY STRONG. The Power element means ambition, the ability to acquire power. Strong Power means that the native sets very clear goals to his/her life and does everything needed to reach those goals. Furthermore, strong Power in good charts means that the native will be lucky in his or her undertakings. Wealth is what is owned by the native, like money and other assets. Besides being very famous and popular, Oprah is an influential person, called by both CNN and Time magazine the “world’s most powerful woman”. Furthermore, she is one of the wealthiest women in the world. I think the match between the chart and reality is perfect. The good thing with Oprah’s chart, in my view, is: her Day Master is strong enough to cope with all the elements that try to exhaust it. In other words, she is strong enough to conquer power, to earn money (and accumulate wealth), and to express herself. If we classify her Day Master as a strong one, the favourable elements are Power (Metal), Wealth (Earth) and Output (Fire). And they are present in the chart and strong. This is a lucky chart.
4. PROBABLE USEFUL GOD: GUI. This is a Winter chart and Fire is the weakest element in the chart. Master Joseph Yu stresses the crucial importance of Fire in every Wood Day Master born in (Chinese) Winter chart. From this point of view, Fire should be the Useful God. But I am not yet sure about this.

I’m posting this analysis on this blog because I don’t want to “jam” the Four Pillars (Joseph Yu’s) Group with these too long texts. This is part of my “Four Pillars Collection” project. Comments from members of the List are welcome!
